Time marches on, and here we are, one week into a new year, brimming with the promise of possibilities. If you share my enthusiasm for the journey ahead, then you're ready to charge into 2024, armed with ambitions and a reflection on the lessons learned from 2023.
The year 2024 is now upon us. Woohoo!!!
Before we dive into the grand tapestry of my goals for 2024, let's explore the insights gained from completing the Year-End Review Template.
Reflecting on 2023: A Tapestry of Progress
In the backdrop of 2023, I deliberately wove threads of self-care into the fabric of my life, granting myself the grace to relax and focusing on my health. A significant departure from the hustle and bustle, this deliberate pause allowed me to introspect and ensure that moments of rest were intricately woven into the complex pattern of my schedule.
Goals in Review: A Dance Between Vision and Reality
What were my goals?
The first goal I had for 2023 was to take Q1 off to focus on strategizing.
The second goal was launching my FREE Master Class, The Hard Truth About Film Funding.
My third goal was to hire an editor to edit our YouTube and short-form videos.
My fourth goal was to grow our YouTube subscriber list and student enrollment.
My fifth goal was to create and release digital production documents.
What actually happened?
I executed the first two goals. In addition…
I shot a short film all by myself. I’m documenting the process on YouTube.
I wrote a feature film screenplay.
I've been diligently crafting the "Indie Filmmaker's Business Plan Bootcamp."
I didn't finish creating my digital production documents
I didn’t hit my goal of 1,000 YouTube subscribers by year-end.
I didn’t hire an editor.
I did not follow my marketing strategy.
Navigating the Nuances of 2023: Why did it happen?
At the start of 2023, I wrote a blog outlining my goals and vision. You can check it out here: Diversity in Cinema Academy's 2023 Goals.
As the tapestry of 2023 unfolded, it bore the intricate threads of both triumphs and challenges. Noteworthy achievements, such as the webinar for “The Hard Truth About Film Funding,” my solo filmmaking endeavor and the birth of a feature film screenplay, stood as pillars of accomplishment.
However, the path to certain goals, such as attaining 1,000 YouTube subscribers and adhering to the marketing strategy, became a terrain fraught with complexities.
Among the challenges faced, a notable aspect was the unmet ambition of increasing the enrollment percentage for "Leveling Up Your Film Business." Despite the strides made in other areas, this goal posed particular complexities. The delicate balance required to expand course participation amidst a packed schedule revealed the need for a focused approach to achieving educational milestones.
The unfolding of the year brought forth a nuanced picture, where the pursuit of ambitious objectives collided with the realities of a busy schedule. The decision to embark on a Master's in Digital Marketing added a layer of complexity to an already bustling agenda. The symphony of challenges played out in a delicate dance between creative pursuits, academic endeavors, and the ongoing responsibilities of a solopreneur.
What lessons did you learn?
Amidst the creative chaos, the biggest lesson echoed – the need for consistency and a guard against plate overload. As a solopreneur, the delicate balance between the incessant flow of ideas and focused progress became a tightrope walk. The lesson learned was clear: it's not about doing more but doing with intent and consistency.
What can I do better next time?
In 2024, the focus is on key improvements: maintaining consistency, streamlining goals, and strategic time management.
Flexibility in marketing strategies is vital, optimizing educational offerings for increased enrollment is a priority, and a balanced approach to creativity and academia is essential.
Actively seeking collaborations and networking, prioritizing self-care, and a commitment to continuous learning are specific strategies for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
Now that I've completed some much-needed reflection and introspection, I'm ready to set my intentions for 2024!

#2 Submit my short film to several festivals
Submitting my short film to several festivals is a crucial goal for me as an up-and-coming director for various compelling reasons. Firstly, film festivals provide invaluable platforms for showcasing my work to a broader audience, including industry professionals, critics, and potential collaborators. This exposure has the potential to significantly elevate my visibility and showcase my creative vision.
Participating in festivals also offers me unique networking opportunities, allowing me to connect with fellow filmmakers, producers, and industry insiders. These connections can lead to collaborations, mentorships, and open doors to future projects.
Moreover, festival recognition adds credibility to my portfolio, enhancing my reputation within the industry. Awards or nominations from reputable festivals can serve as powerful endorsements, attracting attention and opportunities for my future projects.
Additionally, the festival circuit provides a platform for critical feedback. Screening my film in front of diverse audiences allows me to gauge audience reactions, understand the strengths and weaknesses of my work, and refine my craft based on real-world responses.
Lastly, successful festival submissions contribute to building my professional track record, establishing me as a serious and noteworthy talent. This recognition can be leveraged when seeking funding, partnerships, or invitations to contribute to other projects.
In essence, submitting my short film to festivals is a strategic step towards establishing myself as a credible and influential director in the competitive landscape of the film industry.
#3 Conclude the YouTube series, “Shooting a Short Film by Yourself”

Each episode is crafted to provide valuable insights and practical tips for aspiring filmmakers navigating the challenges of solo filmmaking.
#4 Growing my subscriber list and student enrollment
A pivotal objective for Diversity in Cinema Academy is the expansion of our YouTube subscriber base and student enrollment. This goal isn't just about the numbers; it's a commitment to our mission.
As a filmmaker, my passion lies in sharing experiences and expertise to spare others from the heartaches and hardships often endured on the filmmaking path. The growth of our YouTube community and online courses serves as a cornerstone in our efforts to foster a supportive learning environment.
By delivering video content, newsletters, and blogs, we contribute to a dynamic online learning experience that's integral to the success and impact of Diversity in Cinema Academy in the coming year. It's more than growth; it's about building a community and empowering aspiring filmmakers from diverse backgrounds.
#5 Produce a feature film
Diving headfirst into producing a feature film, involves the gritty work of developing, organizing, shooting, editing, marketing, and targeting distribution on streaming platforms.
It's no cakewalk; shooting an independent feature film is a battlefield of challenges.
From managing large scale creative ideas to wrestling with budget constraints, navigating complex shooting schedules, and strategizing for streaming platform distribution, this journey is bound to be a rollercoaster.
#6 Launch a YouTube series documenting my feature film journey
Launching a YouTube series documenting my feature film journey is a pivotal goal for several reasons. First and foremost, it provides transparency into the filmmaking process, offering an authentic behind-the-scenes look at the challenges, triumphs, and creative decision-making involved in bringing a feature film to life. This transparency not only engages and educates our audience but also establishes a connection between Diversity in Cinema Academy and its community.
Furthermore, the YouTube series serves as a valuable marketing tool, creating anticipation and excitement around the upcoming feature film. It allows us to build a loyal audience, generate interest, and showcase the unique aspects of our filmmaking approach. This engagement is crucial for expanding the reach of Diversity in Cinema Academy and establishing a lasting connection with viewers.
Additionally, sharing the feature film journey on YouTube contributes to the academy's educational mission. It becomes a learning resource for aspiring filmmakers, offering real-world insights, lessons learned, and practical tips that can guide and inspire others on their own filmmaking endeavors. In essence, this goal aligns with our commitment to fostering a diverse and informed filmmaking community while expanding the influence and impact of Diversity in Cinema Academy.
#7 Create and release digital production documents
This goal is still on my to-do list; unfortunately, it's still a low priority. But I really want you all to have current documents and forms. There are a ton of free production documents floating around on the internet. I even downloaded some of those documents when I started my filmmaking career.
However, the one thing I noticed since I've been in this industry is that those forms are VERY OUTDATED. It's no telling how long those forms have been floating around. I started in the industry over a decade ago, and they were OUTDATED then. I just didn't know any better.
That's why it is imperative for me to create new, more relevant forms for today's filmmakers.
As we set sail into 2024, remember:
"In the world of filmmaking, each goal is a scene waiting to be shot – embrace the script, adjust the lens, and let the magic unfold."
There's nothing like sharing your goals with your virtual friends to make sure we stay accountable and actually work towards completing our goals!
